Industry Update: Top Search Marketing News from October

Google continues to push back Privacy Sandbox timeline

Google announced in July that they were releasing their new Privacy Sandbox in Q4 2021 (right now), but the new expected timeframe is Q1 2022. This matters because any change in the release timeline will likely affect when and possibly how Chrome phases out support for third-party cookies

Do outbound links to credible sites boost SEO?

The short answer is: No, it does not have a direct effect on SEO (which is hilarious for us, since that’s why this blog series was born in the first place – but we’ve grown, and now we just want to share the news with you, so we’ll stick around). So where did this apparent rumor start in the first place? Basically, it’s a practice that evolved from a 1998 algorithm research paper created by Brett Tabke.

Google updates Search Quality Raters Guidelines

Google has made changes to the manual that trains search quality evaluators:

  • Updated definition for “Groups of people”
  • Updated info on how to research reputation information for websites and creators
  • Major overhaul to the “Lowest Page Quality” section
  • Changes to the “Upsetting-Offensive” definition
  • Additional edits for clarity and consistency throughout the guidelines

App campaigns no longer require deep linking

Google Ads announced that App advertisers no longer need to use deep linking to run campaigns for engagement. This is great news for those who don’t necessarily have the tools or developer support to implement deep linking. This allows people to get their campaigns up and running faster than before, though keep in mind conversion rate might take a hit if they’re not landing on a dedicated page.
