Richland, WA is the home of The Hanford Site. Established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, the site was home to the first full-scale plutonium production reactor in the world. Plutonium manufactured at the site was used in the first atomic bomb- which was tested in the Trinity nuclear test- as well as in the Fat Man bomb used in the bombing of Nagasaki. The city of Richland embraces this part of its history, and many local establishments are named in recognition of it; such as Bombing Range Brewing Company, Atomic Bowling, and most notable of all, the high-school sports teams, The Richland Bombers.
