AI for law firms isn’t a distant trend—it’s already here, and it’s moving fast.
Jeff Hughes, CEO of Sterling Lawyers—Rocket Clicks’ sister company—recently learned that the AI-powered law firm Eudia raised over $100 million and gained approval to operate under Arizona’s Alternative Business Structure program.
This allows non-lawyers to co-own a law firm for the first time.
For family law attorneys, this isn’t a distant threat—it’s a clear signal. The legal industry is shifting, and the firms that learn to work with AI tools for attorneys today will be the ones leading tomorrow.
Arizona’s Alternative Business Structure (ABS) program is unlike anything the rest of the country currently allows. It directly challenges ABA Model Rule 5.4, which prohibits non-lawyers from sharing in legal fees.
Eudia used this opening to build a hybrid law firm — one where attorneys and AI systems work side by side. Think of it like the Iron Man suit: a skilled, experienced lawyer enhanced by AI capabilities that make them faster, sharper, and more efficient.
Their current focus is business law — contract review, M&A due diligence, and predictive analysis. But the model has clear implications for family law, too.
Example: Eudia’s pitch to enterprise clients is simple — we’ll reduce your legal costs while keeping licensed attorneys involved. Family law firms can build a similar value prop by using AI to handle document prep while attorneys focus on client relationships.
Here’s the good news: family law is deeply human work. It involves emotion, support, and trust — the kinds of soft skills that AI simply cannot replicate.
Clients going through divorce or custody disputes aren’t looking for a chatbot. They want an attorney who listens, advocates, and understands the full weight of what they’re going through.
That said, a meaningful portion of family law work is document-based. And that’s exactly where AI is already making its move.
Example: At Sterling Lawyers, the team is already experimenting with AI to accelerate document drafting. The goal isn’t to replace attorneys — it’s to free them up to serve more clients at a higher level.
Example: A new associate straight out of law school typically spends months learning how a specific judge rules. With a well-trained AI tool built on firm data, that knowledge becomes accessible from their very first case.
You don’t need a tech background to get started. These four practical steps are designed for non-techie attorneys who want to build real AI fluency without feeling overwhelmed.
Example: One law firm co-founder replaced Google with Perplexity for all daily searches. It felt awkward at first, but within a few weeks his default mental habit had shifted completely — and his AI fluency followed.
Example: Jeff Hughes, co-founder of Sterling Lawyers, credits his daily AI podcast habit with giving him early awareness of the Eudia story — and the time to think through its implications before it became mainstream news in the legal industry.
Example: Tyler Dolph used ChatGPT to build a custom coloring book for his son’s birthday, complete with the family dog and both kids as characters. The point wasn’t the output — it was building comfort with the tool so it felt natural in a work context.
Example: During a financial planning session at Sterling Lawyers, instead of debating a complex attorney bonus forecasting formula, the team fed all the variables into ChatGPT and had a working solution within minutes — saving the entire room hours of back-and-forth.
AI for law firms isn’t about replacing attorneys. It’s about making them more capable.
The family law firms that move early will compound their advantages — better documents, faster turnaround, sharper insights, and lower overhead. They’ll serve more clients without burning out their teams.
Start with one habit. Build from there. The window to adapt ahead of your competition is still open — but it won’t stay open forever.
