CHALLENGE
When someone searches “divorce lawyer” from their kitchen table, Google shows three firms on a map. If your office isn’t one of them in that neighborhood, you don’t exist for that search—no matter how good your attorneys are.
For a firm with dozens of offices, that problem multiplies. Each location ranks block by block differently, rankings swing week to week, and a single good scan can hide a result that won’t hold.
Sterling Lawyers started 2026 with the same blind spots in three markets:
- St. Charles: on January 1, Sterling didn’t appear in Google’s top three anywhere on its tracked map for “st charles divorce lawyers.”
- Plainfield: on January 1, Sterling showed up in the top three across just 20% of its map for “family lawyers.”
- Milwaukee: on August 17, Sterling appeared in the top three for only 26% of its map for “milwaukee family lawyers.”
SOLUTION
Local map rankings don’t behave like a single website ranking. A firm can sit in the top three downtown and be invisible five miles out—and the picture changes every week. Reporting a “rank” for an office hides most of that.
Sterling didn’t need more marketing. It needed to know where it stood on the map, and a plan built for each market it serves.
So we built the local SEO system that the 30+ office family law firm now runs across its offices:
OUTCOME
By September 21, Sterling showed up in Google’s top three across far more of its tracked maps. In St. Charles, it has held there for 12 straight weeks.
A note on the numbers: map visibility is the share of spots on a grid around an office where Google shows Sterling in its top three local results. 72% means Sterling is in the top three at about 7 of every 10 spots on that map.
